DEATH MORT TOD - A European Book of the Dead / 2018

This series of 47 illustrations; photographs, collages, photo montages, sculptures and miniature installations, is a visual response to 47 text fragments written by the author and collaborator Steve Finbow.

Finbow's text uses fiction, non-fiction and appropriation — from authors, philosophers, journalism, fiction and the work of artists from ancient times to post-modernism — touring the dark sites of Europe with its millennia of genocides, mass murders, serial killings and suicides.
The images — 'modern vanitas' — resonate with the text either by association or condensation and create an independent visual commentary on the inevitability of death.

All illustrations were created without any externally sourced visual material. Clay, sand, ash, animal bones, blood, paint, salt, thread, mud, and human hair can be found among a variety of used components.
Death Mort Tod - A European Book of the Dead, was published by Infinity Land Press in 2018.
