Death Poems

This series of austere, black-and-white still-life photographs was produced for the publication of Death Poems by Jacques Prevel.

Documented through a half-sealed glass tank over a period of four weeks (April-May 2023), the gradual decomposition of a pig’s heart illustrates symbolically the passage from birth to death and the futility of all human activity. In the words of the translator Tobias Freeman, [Prevel’s] poetry is a scream passing into formlessness … The man, the human subject vanishes, or more precisely is negated, and poetry becomes the decayed remnant, the shadow perversely lingering in the wake of the annihilated self, like an atomic flash on a desert sand.

Death Poems was published by Infinity Land Press on the 1st of October 2023.
