The Torture of the 100 Pieces
The Torture of The 100 Pieces, is a collaboration with the artist Martin Bladh, whose premise nods to Georges Bataille’s infamous obsession with a series of photographs depicting the Chinese execution technique Lingchi - “death by a thousand cuts.”
Over a period of eight years, Bladh’s body was subjected to a wide variety of wounds inflicted by both himself and another. My photographs document and aestheticize these wounds, making not the body but the skin the primary focus of the viewer’s gaze. The textures and colours of the flesh resemble landscapes marked by disaster and inadvertently recall aerial photographs of battlefields.
In this work, Bladh’s presence exists primarily through the juxtaposition of the photographs and accompanying written materials, whose common theme traces the complex and shifting relationships between the creative and the cruel, art and violence, and brutality and culture.
